Explore Kilimanjaro with Doug Dvorak at the Timbers

Doug Dvorak will present a travel program on Kilimanjaro from 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 31, at The Timbers of Shorewood, 1100 N. River Rd., Shorewood.

Using photos and narrative, Dvorak will take the crowd into the Kilimanjaro National Park in Tanzania, where one can find the highest mountain in Africa–Kilimanjaro. Nicknamed the “Roof of Africa,” this dormant volcano is 19,341 feet above sea level with three volcanic cones: Kibo, Mawenzi and Shira. While Mawenzi and Shira are extinct, the last recorded activity of Kibo was 200 years ago, and it could erupt again.

Kilimanjaro is also the tallest free-standing mountain in the world. The name could mean “Mountain of Light,” “Mountain of Greatness” or “Mountain of Caravans,” though no one is really sure.

Over 1,000 people reached the mountain’s summit to see the sun rise over a new millennium on the first of January in 2000. Today 20,000 people attempt to climb the majestic mountain each year. It is a goal many can accomplish, especially if taken what is now known as the “Coca Cola route”—complete with comfortable huts for tourists to sleep in, food and drink for sale and a throng of fellow climbers along the way.

The mountain is home to almost every kind of ecological system including cultivated land, rain forest, heath, moorland, alpine desert and an arctic summit. Climbers experience a range of climates from the tropics to the Arctic.

Dvorak is a professional speaker who hosts motivational presentations, seminars and workshops for numerous Fortune 1000 companies, small businesses, civic organizations, and individual investors and entrepreneurs. His popularity may be due to his great sense of humor. He is a graduate of the Player’s Workshop of the Second City, one of the oldest and most prestigious improvisational comedy schools in the world.

The Timbers of Shorewood is a rental retirement community which provides independent and assisted living apartments and a full schedule of activities and services.
