Quality of Life Seminar: Hospice Basics and Benefits at the Timbers

A seminar on Hospice Basics and Benefits is presented by Vitas Healthcare at the Timbers of Shorewood retirement community. A professional from Vitas Healthcare will present a program titled “Hospice Basics and Benefits” at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 5, at The Timbers of Shorewood retirement community, 1100 N. River Rd., Shorewood.

Hospice care is a philosophy of care for those that are terminally or seriously ill and have six months or less to live. Hospice strives to provide comfort, self-respect and tranquility during a patient’s final months of life. Rather than have a patient spend his or her last moments in the confines of a hospital room, hospice care often is given from the comfort of a patient’s own home. For seniors with six months or less to live, hospice care can be a great resource, not only for the patient but for the family as well.

In 2011 more than 66 percent of patients from ages 65 to over 85 receiving hospice care passed away at their place of residence.

With a focus on palliative care (pain and symptom relief) rather than ongoing curative measures, hospice care intends to lessen the burden of a serious illness. It offers patients the chance to focus on spending time with loved ones and allows them to maintain some control over how they spend their final days.

All aspects of a patient’s life and well-being are focused on including social, emotional and spiritual health. With no age restriction, anyone in the late stages of life is eligible for hospice services.

Most services include an interdisciplinary team (IDT) consisting of:
•    the patient’s physician
•    a hospice doctor
•    a case manager
•    registered nurses
•    licensed practical nurses (i.e. dietitian, therapist, counselor, minister)
•    various trained volunteers

A care plan tailored to the individual’s need for pain management is developed by the IDT. Because care is typically provided in the patient’s home, a family member acts as the primary caregiver under the supervision of the medical staff.

IDT members make regular visits for patient assessment and services. Hospice staff is on-call 24 hours a day, seven days a week throughout the patient’s care. The patient’s loved one is provided with support and counseling, should he or she need it.

Long-term care facilities, such as assisted living, usually have established working relationships with one or more hospice providers. This makes for a smooth transition in care for a resident of a long-term care facility.

The Timbers of Shorewood is a rental retirement community which provides independent and assisted living apartments and a full schedule of activities and services. Furnished apartments are also available for a short-term stay – a weekend, a week, a month or longer.

The event is free and open to the public. For more information or to register, call Shelly Goggins at 815-609-0669.
