Weather Preparedness with Troy TRIAD at the Timbers

A Weather Preparedness meeting with Troy TRIAD will be held for residents and the public at the Timbers of Shorewood retirement community. Shorewood Police Chief Aaron Kilma and the Shorewood Emergency Management Agency (EMA) will hold a Troy TRIAD meeting to discuss “Weather Preparedness” at 9 a.m. Wednesday, March. 13, at The Timbers of Shorewood retirement community, 1100 N. River Rd., Shorewood. The public is welcome to attend this free event.

A number of severe weather hazards affect Illinois every year including thunderstorms and tornados. These extreme weather conditions have the potential to not only cause extensive property damage, but injury and even death.

Approximately 1,000 tornados touch down in the United States annually and Illinois ranks fifth in the country for the most tornados per 10,000 square miles. Tornado season in Illinois typically lasts from mid-March to June with an average of 46 tornados each year.

Tornados develop out of severe thunderstorms, where there is already a steady, upward flow of warm, low-pressure air. However, thunderstorms ranging in severity also often occur without a resulting tornado. Severe thunderstorms can produce heavy rains, hail, damaging winds and lightening.

In the event of these weather conditions, it is important to have an evacuation plan in place and essential materials at hand.

Essential materials include:
•    flashlight with fresh batteries
•    a three-day supply of medication
•    bottled water
•    canned goods and a manual can opener

If caught in a severe storm area, try to:
•    seek immediate protection indoors away from doors and windows
•    listen to the radio/T.V. for the latest weather information
•    turn off air conditioners
•    avoid using a corded telephone or electrical appliances

Knowing what to bring during an evacuation can be critical. In addition to personal items and essentials, important papers such as insurance policies and cards, medical information, a list of style and serial numbers for medical devices (i.e. pacemakers) and family and physician contact numbers should all be packed.

People often worry about the safety of loved ones, but that worry is more intense for those who suffer from diseases like Alzheimer’s or dementia. Care Trak, a tracking service using telemetry based technology, helps to locate and safely bring home those with  Alzheimer’s, dementia or autism who tend to wander and get lost.

If severe weather results in the need for an emergency evacuation, caretakers and family members are provided with peace of mind knowing their loved one will be found in the aftermath.

In addition to Care Trak services, the meeting will also teach how to navigate an Emergency Preparedness Guide and discuss how the Shorewood Emergency Management Agency can assist community members if disaster strikes.

Troy TRIAD, a branch of Will County TRIAD for Seniors, is made up of the sheriff, police and seniors in an effort to reduce crime against the elderly. The senior population is united with law enforcement, community service agencies and other individuals to identify, educate and address specific needs in the senior community.

The Timbers of Shorewood is a rental retirement community which provides independent and assisted living apartments and a full schedule of activities and services. Furnished apartments are also available for a short-term stay – a weekend, a week, a month or longer.

This event is free and open to the public, but seating is limited. RSVP to 815-744-1968 by March 11. For more information call Shelly Goggins at 815-609-0669.
