Distinguished Young Women Illinois Scholarship Pageant at the Timbers

Distinguished Young Women Illinois Scholarship Pageant at the Timbers of Shorewood Retirement Community. A Distinguished Young Women of Illinois scholarship pageant will take place at 2 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 18, at The Timbers of Shorewood, 1100 N. River Rd., Shorewood.

Nine young women will vie for the chance to win scholarships through a pageant competition. Participants will deliver speeches, showcase talents and answer questions just as in any other American pageant.

The girls will compete in the following categories:
•    scholastic achievement,
•    interview,
•    physical fitness,
•    talent and
•    self-expression.

Judged by a panel of five previous winners, the participants must demonstrate stamina, coordination, talent and be able to effectively communication their thoughts to questions asked on stage.

There will be a winner selected for each category as well as an overall “Distinguished Young Woman” chosen and announced during the awards presentation. Though judged before the pageant, the scholastics category and interview also are factored into the overall winner’s score.

Last year’s representative, Julia Markun of Peoria, will be in attendance to say her farewells.

Distinguished Young Women is the oldest and largest scholarship program for high school girls in the nation. It strives to inspire the development of full, individual potential through a fun, transformative experience that culminates in a showcase of the girls’ accomplishments.

All awards are for college scholarships to the college of the winner’s choice. There are no crowns, no sashes and no swimsuit. Instead, the goals of the program are to positively impact the lives of young women by promoting and rewarding scholarship, leadership and talent.

With a local presence in all 50 states, there are more than 400 local programs in towns and cities across the country. Girls begin by competing in their local program. Winners then participate in the state program from which a state representative is chosen. A national program for all state representatives is held annually in Mobile, AL.
