Explore the San Juan Islands with Doug Dvorak at the Timbers

Doug Dvoark presents a travelogue on the San Juan Islands at the Timbers of Shorewood. Doug Dvorak will present a travel program on the San Juan Islands at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 16, at The Timbers of Shorewood, 1100 N. River Rd., Shorewood.

The San Juan Islands are a chain of islands located in the northwest corner of the contiguous United States, some 80 miles north of Seattle. There are approximately 172 islands in the archipelago—the island group—with over 300 miles of shoreline. The islands are mostly comprised of hilly land. The coastlines consist of a mix of rocky and sandy beaches, placid and reef-studded bays, and shallow and deep harbors.

San Juan Island and Orcas Island are today among the most popular. Their primary attractions are sea kayaking and orca whale-watching by boat or air tours. In fact, Lime Kiln Point State Park on San Juan hosts the only whale watching park in the world. More than 100,000 people visit the site each year in hopes of catching a glimpse of the orcas.

With no traffic lights and an average of 247 days of sunshine a year, the islands have become a popular spot for vacationers and retirees alike. Some smaller islands are even owned and inhabited by individual families.

Indians, mostly of the Lummi nation, were the earliest inhabitants of the islands.  Historically, the islands have largely been populated by hard-working farmers, fishermen and seafarers, among others.

Dvorak is a professional speaker who hosts motivational presentations, seminars and workshops for numerous Fortune 1000 companies, small businesses, civic organizations, and individual investors and entrepreneurs. His popularity may be due to his great sense of humor. He is a graduate of the Player’s Workshop of the Second City, one of the oldest and most prestigious improvisational comedy schools in the world.
